This paper describes a study on effectiveness of Japanese anti-aliased fonts. This study consists of two experiments. In experiment-1, a subjective evaluation was carried out by using limited number of anti-aliased fonts, in order to estimate the effectiveness of Japanese anti-aliased fonts. As a result of the experiment-1, it was found that anti-aliasing is more effective for small characters (15×16) of Kanji/Kana characters. In experiment-2, new character sets of Japanese anti-aliased fonts were created, and both user performance and preference were evaluated. The results indicated that the proofreading speed on Japanese anti-aliased fonts was significantly faster than that on bi-level (traditional) fonts, and that the anti-aliased fonts were significantly preferable to the bi-level fonts.

This paper was prepared as the proceedings of the 3rd joint symposium hosted by JERS system related research groups, held last March at Inter-University Seminar House located Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan. But this short report is not exactly the same as I presented before.
One of the reason for that is I also made another oral presentation at the symposium S5 last June at Sendai Civic Auditorium concentrating to international political backgrounds of the item.
Contents: 1. Introduction (the significance of new JIS Z 8513, the Japanese version of ISO 9241-3)
2. The relation between JIS Z 8513 and JIS X 6041, as well as ISO 9241-3 and BS 7179:Part 3
3. Applicability of the type of electronic display device (CRT and/or FPD?)
4. Summary (ISO-9341-3 should not be ‘IS’ but ‘TR’, proposal for the future)
Keywords: Visual ergonomics, Japanese industrial standard, International standardization

Standard sitting postures are printed to the guideline of VDT. These postures are: bending the knee squarely, standing the trunk upright and incurving the spine in front. In the past, orthopedists recommended these postures. Even though the posture is correct, to maintain the same posture causes the decrease f metabolizing intervertebral disk, and ischemia of muscular. Furthermore, these occasionally cause lumbago. For a long time, it has been pointed out that we should sometimes change our sitting posture. The purpose of this study is to propose how to sit in office and to give information about sitting postures for workers. We researched on the actual condition of postures in office and collected various pictures of postures from books and magazines, then classified these postures by using the image Delphi method. The key words for classification were Elegant, Formal and Happy. This result shows that the postures in actual office tend to maintain one style monotonously, while the postures in books and magazines have many styles. We presented a new style of seating methods.

Facial expressions have close relations with emotions. So facial expressions can be measured in order to find one’s emotions. Therefore facial expressions can become an important measurement index of ergonomics. In this thesis, those measurement methods are discussed. Though electromyogram has been generally used to measure facial expressions, a facial expressions of subjects can be caught by video images in this new method using the presence communication system. If this method is used, the expression can be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Therefore, a measurement of facial expression using presence communication system can become one of the important measurement methods of ergonomics.

It is known that some of nursing skill is hard for nurse. For example, to move patients parallel to head direction is biologically taught. For this purpose, two ways are common, first with hands, and second with bath-towel. We analyzed working posture and we found bath- towel method is more excellent to another. Subject was healthy nursing students (18-21 years old in age, 1 male and 3 females). Working posture analyzed by print out film from VTR portrait. Point of view is as follows, (1) height of bed (54~83 cm), and angle of the upper body, (2) wideness of standing feet, (3) size of bath towel (62×122, 84×133 cm), (4) grip (natural handgrip, reverse handgrip).
